“Soy de aqui, como el Coqui” which translates to ” I am from here like the Coqui”, is a common phrase used by many on the island. Puerto Ricans take pride in their heritage, culture, music, and customs. It is no surprise that this sweet, small frog is the unofficial symbol of Puerto Rico. As per the article title, “The Natural History of Model Organisms: The big potential of the small frog Eleutherodactylus coqui”, the Taino people believed that a goddess created Coqui to call the name of her lover, who had been missing due to tragedy. The Coqui was loved by the Taino people and those alive today. These small frogs can be as small as 15 millimeters and vary in color from brown to green and yellow. There are a few species found in El Yunque rainforest.  The beautiful mating call sounds resonates with our hearts and reminds us of our connection to nature and our ancestors. The songs of Coqui are never a bother to the true natives of Puerto Rico.
