I Was A Poet For A Night

It was May 6th, 2010 when I decided to walk over to Nyorican Poets Cafe. The cafe is located in the Lower East Side and was established in 1973. I became a poet for the night and I somehow found the courage to go on stage. I had been writing poetry for some months at the time. These poems became an outlet due to personal challenges. I was so proud of my poems and wanted to share them.

I remember the butterflies in my stomach as I was getting ready at home. I was rehearsing in front of the mirror and having second thoughts. I was beyond nervous but put on my jacket and went on my way. The 45-minute trip into the city welcomed me with a long line outside the venue. I saw dancers and musicians rehearsing their numbers. Once inside you can appreciate the art on the walls and the low-key type of vibe. The crowd was very appreciative and respectful.

Art on the walls inside the venue.

I was so nervous but had tons of fun.

This is the poem I wrote and read on stage:

The Garden Within

We reap what we sow, so sow goodness.

Allow bitterness and hurt to prevail and it eventually turns into hatred overnight.

Open the door to forgiveness when ready, and then you will experience inner freedom.

We reap what we sow, so sow purity.

The malice that lives in a shattered world

can only survive if entertained with pain.

A clear mindset can radically change a destructive idea while helping us stay safe from the wounding harm.

The garden in our hearts calls for attention.

It’s exhausted from keeping the pests away.

Therefore, give it a break from darkness.

Encourage it to feed off the sweet honey

Found in the horizon of your vulnerability.

Note: Nuyorican Poets Cafe closed its doors on October 31, 2023, and now hosts off-site events. Check out their website for more information.
