5 Tips to Text Messaging Etiquette

Hey there! Some links on this page are referral links which means that, if you choose to make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I greatly appreciate your support!

Have you ever had to text message a friend or family member, only to not hear from them for hours or days or never (prompting you to call them to ensure they are alive)? I find this to be rude behavior. How about asking a question and getting a plain NO for an answer? This last one does not sit well with me. Here are some tips for texting etiquette! Drum roll, please…

1.  Make a Call Instead
If the conversation via text is of a serious tone, then perhaps you might need to call instead. This is most likely the best route, only because if it’s a serious issue, you might be texting a long story.

2. Do Not Text and Drive
This one should be obvious, but do not text and drive. Please do not ever do that. No more to say here. Next.

3. Do Not Disappear
Whatever you do, refrain from ghosting someone or keeping them hanging for hours or days. Especially if they are asking you a question, it not only comes across as rude, but it appears as if you do not care.

4. Do Not Use All Caps
It sounds like you are screaming, and you are probably not trying. It’s not a good use of capital letters. It just gives the wrong message. They might think you are screaming or angry at them.

5. End the Text Messages Positively
Try your very best to finish your text messages with grace and on a good note. Perhaps a funny joke or a lighthearted saying will do. How about a simple, “Hope to text you again soon,” or a quick “Goodnight”? Sign off with style and leave a good impression.

I hope these tips help you refresh your knowledge or increase your texting skills. So, get out there and start practicing by sending a smiley face emoji or saying “Hello”.
