Is that time of the season when we go through our closets and look at our own inventory. If you’re from Puerto Rico you’ll say something along the lines of “Que mucha porqueria”! Laugh out loud or maybe not depending on how cluttered your closet is, but have no fear with these cool tips. Hopefully, these could help you organize your closets as we enter the spring season. Perhaps, this can become your spring cleaning project! Let’s dig in.
1. Take Everything Out
The first thing you want to do is you want to take everything out of the closets. Go ahead and empty them. It’s like starting with a clean canvas. Think of the result as a masterpiece after you are done. This is probably the hardest part but do not give up on your vision. Take a deep breath and find motivation in the fact that you will love how organized everything will be.
2. Separate Each Item By Category
Next, you are going to separate Each item by category. You can do this over a made-up bed if you are in the bedroom or anywhere you desire. The idea is to find a work space in your home. The shirts go in one corner, pants in another corner and you get the point.
3. Keep, Selling and Donating
Once you have separated by category your next step is figuring out what you are going to keep, sell, or donate. You are going to go through everything that fits and doesn’t fit. Create a pile of items that you are keeping. I’ll explain more later. Also, remove items that have stains, and holes and are not salvageable since you might want to donate these in places like Salvation Army or Goodwill. Then make a pile of items that no longer fit and are in good condition or you had for 5-10 years and hardly wore. These items you could sell in places like ThredUp, Poshmark, or Mercari. Also, for pieces that are at least 20 years old consider Depop.
4. Never Throw Clothing Away
There are problems with throwing your unwanted clothes away. World Resource Institute states it could take more than 200 years for fibers to decompose when they end up in a landfill. Also, think about the liters of water that it takes to create one simple cotton shirt. You could also donate your clothing to local churches, and buy nothing groups with Facebook or family and friends.
5. Separate Your Wanted Pieces By Color
Go ahead and separate your clothing by color. This is my favorite tip because not only will your closet look more organized, you can find things easier, and will look aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Oh, and do not forget to invest in good quality hangers these will give your closet that neat look and your clothing will maintain its shape and reduce wrinkles too.
